Preparing for the ACS General Chemistry Exam was different from preparing for a regular class test. I quickly realized that knowing formulas was not enough. I needed to understand why a chemical relationship worked and recognize how to apply it to unfamiliar questions.
The ACS Examinations Institute provides general chemistry assessments covering material commonly taught across first- and second-term general chemistry courses. Its official study guide also organizes preparation around major areas such as stoichiometry, bonding, solutions, kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry.

ACS General Chemistry Exam Preparation
I started by taking a timed ACS General Chemistry Practice Test to see where I actually stood. My first result was useful because it showed that I was more comfortable with straightforward calculations than with conceptual questions.
Instead of simply reviewing everything again, I listed the topics where I made mistakes. This gave my study sessions a much clearer direction.
ACS General Chemistry Exam Topics
My review focused heavily on stoichiometry, atomic and electronic structure, bonding, gases, solutions, thermochemistry, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, and electrochemistry. These areas are consistent with the topics identified by the ACS Examinations Institute for its general chemistry materials.
I also noticed that small details could change an answer. Units, significant figures, chemical relationships, and interpreting the wording of a question all mattered.
ACS General Chemistry Exam Question Strategy
One of my biggest lessons was to slow down when reading questions. I sometimes knew the chemistry but selected the wrong answer because I rushed through the wording.
I began identifying what the question was actually asking before calculating anything. For numerical problems, I wrote down the known information and checked the units. For conceptual questions, I tried to explain the chemistry in my own words before looking at the choices.
ACS General Chemistry Exam Practice Results
My later practice results improved because I was studying my mistakes rather than simply counting correct answers. I also used an Online ACS General Chemistry Practice Test through Prephow as another way to become comfortable answering questions under timed conditions.
The official ACS student materials explain that their general chemistry study guide contains more than 600 problems, with worked examples and material divided between first- and second-term topics.
The most useful part of my preparation was not achieving a perfect practice score. It was discovering exactly which concepts needed more attention before the actual exam.
