Why Forest Fire Teams Are Switching to Backpack CAFS Systems

When a forest fire team enters difficult terrain — a slope dense with dry vegetation, a remote hillside unreachable by road — the equipment they carry determines how quickly they can respond and how effectively they can stop a fire from spreading.

For decades, that equipment meant a standard backpack water sprayer: a tank of water, a hand pump, and a hose. Simple, durable, and increasingly inadequate for the scale of fire events India’s forests are experiencing.

Over the past five years, forest fire response teams in India and globally have been moving toward Compressed Air Foam System backpack units — better known as CAFS backpacks. Here is why that shift is happening, and what makes CAFS technology fundamentally different in a wildland fire environment.

The Problem with Standard Water Backpacks

A standard water backpack sprayer carries 15 to 20 litres of water. When that water hits burning vegetation, most of it evaporates before doing useful work — it turns to steam on contact with the fire, cooling the fire zone briefly, but not creating the sustained suppression needed to stop fire spread along a fire line.

On dry grass, leaf litter, and tree bark, water runs off surfaces rather than adhering to them. The fire reignites within seconds of the spray moving on. A firefighter covering a fire line with a standard sprayer needs to continually go back over the same ground as the water dries.

This low efficiency means more water consumed faster — and more frequent trips back to a water point that may be a significant distance from the fire line

What CAFS Technology Changes

A CAFS backpack unit — like the CAFS water mist extinguisher backpack range available in 9-litre and 12-litre configurations — introduces compressed air into a water and foam concentrate mixture before discharge. The result is a dense, aerated foam that behaves fundamentally differently from water.

Surface adhesion: CAFS foam clings to tree bark, branches, and ground vegetation instead of running off. A treated surface stays wet and suppressed for minutes — not seconds — after the initial application. This means a firefighter can treat a section of fire line and move forward confidently, knowing the treated area will not reignite immediately.

Efficiency: CAFS technology is commonly quoted as being 15 to 30 times more effective than plain water for equivalent suppression coverage. In practical wildland terms, a 9-litre CAFS backpack can treat a fire line section that would require 200 or more litres of plain water to achieve the same suppression duration.

Radiant heat barrier: The foam structure also acts as a radiant heat barrier, protecting adjacent unburnt vegetation from ignition — a critical advantage when working ahead of a fire front.

Single-Operator Wearable Deployment

The backpack form factor is a genuine operational advantage on difficult terrain. A single firefighter carries the complete unit on their back — tank, pressure system, and discharge gun — with both hands free to navigate slopes, move through dense undergrowth, and manage the discharge gun precisely.

This is not possible with wheeled equipment. A trolley unit requires flat or near-flat terrain and two operators. In the forest fire environments where India’s response teams are most frequently deployed — hilly terrain, narrow forest tracks, areas unreachable by vehicle — wearable equipment is the only option.

A portable fire extinguisher of the CAFS backpack type can be carried in, deployed immediately, and used for sustained work without the range limitations of a hose connected to a distant water source.

What Forest Departments and Disaster Response Teams Should Consider

For procurement teams specifying wildland fire equipment, the key questions are capacity, discharge duration, and foam concentrate type. The 9-litre backpack is the standard first-response unit. The 12-litre extends discharge duration for sustained work on longer fire lines or in areas where refilling is not immediately accessible.

Foam concentrate selection matters — Class A foam concentrate for wildland vegetation fires provides the surface adhesion and penetration needed for deep-seated ground fires in leaf litter and peat, in addition to surface fire suppression.

As India’s fire seasons lengthen and forest fire events increase in frequency, the gap between standard water backpacks and CAFS technology is becoming harder to justify for serious response teams.
